“With this truth bearing light will begin a new life. Old unwanted impressions are discarded and we are protected from the damaging effects of new experiences.”
― Patañjali, The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali
When we practice the Yamas and Niyamas, we rid ourselves of old attachments and fears. We arm ourselves with tools and directives that support the growth of inner spirit and strength by applying this simple, ancient wisdom.
I’m smiling as I describe the Yamas and Niyamas as “simple,”because to learn about them is not complex at all. On the surface, the concepts are straightforward: be kind, be honest, and be self-aware to name a few. Beyond the surface are many facets of these concepts and an infinite number of ways they can be used as tools to help us reduce suffering. To embrace these ideals and live them daily requires a deeper understanding of the spirit contained within the guidelines.
Please join me as we learn about the Yamas and Niyamas, the ten tenets of yoga’s ethical practice. We will discuss the meaning of each, and learn how we can personally apply the concepts so that we may live more peaceful lives.
